Trees are very important to the rare sect of Hufh of southern India. The Hufh are a Buddhist sect that originally split in the middle of the 19th century. They believe in many of the traditional beliefs but vary in important ways. They don’t believe in reincarnation, or in worship of relics for instance.

There are only a few hundred people left who practice this and they don’t travel widely. Many anthropologists are worried that this original way of thinking will die out and they caution the Indian Government no to do any thing rash to this small community.
